Davanagere is a town in
the centre of the southern Indian state of Karnataka. It
is the seventh largest town in the state(major town), and
the administrative headquarters of eponymous Davangere district.
Hitherto being a cotton hub and hence popularly known before
as the Manchester of Karnataka, the commercial ventures
of the city is now dominated by education and agro-processing
industries.[citation needed] Davanagere became a separate
district in 1997, when it was separated from the erstwhile
undivided district of Chitradurga for administration conveniences.
Davanagere is known for rich culinary traditions which encompass
the diversity of entire Karnataka's dishes due to its geographical
position in the state as its centre. Notable among them
is its aromatic benne dose that is associated with the name
of the city.
Davanagere was selected
as one of the hundred Indian towns to be developed as a
smart city under Central government's Smart Cities Mission.
It was among the first 20 towns to be developed under the
mission by Ministry of Urban Development. According to 2020
human living index, it was selected as the top 9th most
livable city under 10 million population in India.
Davanagere is situated on
the National Highway No.4. It is connected to all important
places of India through broad-gauge rail routes. The attempts
are being made to have airways links with the important
cities of Karnataka & India. Davanagere has the population
of over five lakhs.
Though Davanagere was earlier
known for its trade commerce, the surrounding villages mainly
depended on agriculture. The main crops like groundnuts,
cotton, paddy and oil seeds grown by these farmers were
being brought to Davanagere. This led to the establishment
of cotton mills, oil extracting mills, rice mills etc in
Davanagere. The Rajanahally, the B.T. and the Chigateri
families stood atop in the establishment of mills and factories
which generated employment opportunities to thousands of
people. The rapid growth in this field got Davanagere the
name "The Manchester of Karnataka". Along with
the mills and factories, business establishments, countries,
hotels, theaters, schools and colleges came into existence.
The birth of Bapuji Educational
Association in 1958 was a milestone in the history of Davanagere.
Before the establishment of this association, there was
a little scope for education in general and higher education
in particular. Today there are more than forty six educational
institutions right from LKG to PG, Diploma to Engineering,
Nursing to Medical, BBM to MBA, B.C.A to M.C.A. In addition
to this, there are a number of government and other private
schools and colleges which cater to the educational needs
of not only the students of Davanagere district but also
the students of other states and abroad.
The fall of cotton and oil
mills due to many reasons brought an end to the glory that
Davanagere once enjoyed as "The Manchester of Karnataka”.
But the growth of educational institutions has now earned
Davanagere the name 'The Oxford of Karnataka' as it were
to compensate the setback that the Davanagere city had experienced.
The growth of the Bapuji Educational Association and Davanagere
city are so identical that the Bapuji Educational Association
and Davanagere have almost become synonyms. Many great families,
donors and lovers of Davanagere along with Sri.ShamanurShivashankarappa,
the present Hon. Secretary of the Bapuji Educational Association
are worth noted in this regard.
